ACADEMICS
St. Mary's fully accredited school places a high emphasis on helping students use their potential for academic growth. The basic curriculum is taught in self-contained classrooms, with specialized teachers for art, music, physical education, and Spanish. Students travel to local public schools for remedial, speech, and learning disability classes. Extra activities include music and drama programs, a science fair, book fair, the student's school newspaper, the Missouri Reading Circle Program and computer education. Tutoring is offered after school for our students who are having some difficulties at no charge to our students. The program runs from October - April of the school year. Children will be recommended for attendance by the classroom teacher or by parent request. National achievement tests are administered each fall and St. Mary's students consistently score above the national average. Teacher instruction, parental involvement, and educational atmosphere all play an important role in the academic emphasis and achievements at the elementary school level. CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENT Caring teachers help students develop a Christian value system to take with them throughout life. Students learn to respond to others' needs by sharing of themselves. Through various activities and discussions, values such as compassion, cooperation, responsibility and self-discipline are learned. These values are learned in the Christian community environment of the school and in religion classes. Religion classes are taught each day and the students participate in a children's liturgy one day a week. TEACHERS All teachers at St. Mary's are certified teachers. Many of them attend advanced classes, workshops and in service training to continually update their knowledge in the teaching profession. BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE For a nominal fee, Before and After School Care is provided for those students who need additional care outside school hours. This program includes snack, exercise and an activity time. FACILITIES St. Mary's School has a modern building, cheerful classrooms, complete food service and an attractive library. STUDENTS Students come to St. Mary's School from Joplin and the surrounding communities. Approximately 10 percent of our students are not Catholic. |
